In DIN EN 13501-1 bzw. der bis auf weiteres noch gültigen DIN 4102-1 werden Auflagen für das das Verhalten von Baumaterialien im Feuer geregelt. Eines der Kriterien ist der Feuer- oder Brandwiderstand eines Bauteils, der die Zeitspanne beschreibt, für die ein Bauteil im Falle eines Brandes funktionstüchtig bleibt.
